OutFest supports the creation and development of new work by providing a platform for emerging queer playwrights and artists to experiment and showcase their work. From the script to the stage, through the entire development and creative process, we work alongside artists to create a staged performance.
Our festival prides itself on creating a welcoming and safe space for all artists and stories, and we encourage everyone to submit regardless of any barrier, seen or unseen.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Friday, August 2nd 2019.

There will be several key changes to OutFest’s usual line-up. Our upcoming festival will now include four one-act plays and three movement-theatre/dance pieces on our Main Stage (The Registry Theatre). We will also be expanding our festival to include one Out-Of-Region submission. The selected playwright will be brought to Kitchener-Waterloo to participate in our development workshops which will be facilitated by professional queer artists.
Other additions include: A Musical Cabaret and a Family Friendly Act.

For more information about our guidelines for one-act submissions please click on the link below or see our FAQ’s at the bottom of this page.

Each selected submission (the four one-acts and three movement-theatre pieces) will be part of one show taking place on the main stage with a total run time of 95-100 minutes. Each selected playwright/artist will join us for two workshops (September and November) which will be facilitated by professional playwright and actor Margo MacDonald (The Elephant Girls). Following the workshops, the creative team will assist each artist with the continued development of their piece. This includes sourcing a creative team; director and actors/performers as we prepare for the festival in March 2020.

Selections for OutFest are chosen by a jury of local and non-local artists. To ensure there is no bias, the playwright/artist of each piece will remain unknown to the jury until after selections are complete.

Our musicals are on the move to create a Musical Cabaret!

Previously, OutFest featured several musical numbers alongside the Main Stage performances but they will now be moved to a second venue nearby (TBD). This new event will be an hour-long show that will take place before OutFest with enough time to travel in between. The cabaret will showcase some of the top singers in the region.

We are looking for 4 -5 singers to join our Musical Cabaret.

OutFest 2020 will also see the addition of a Family-Friendly Act for young audiences and families on Sunday morning. This relaxed show will allow parents with young children to socialize and engage with an age-appropriate show.

Do you have a Family-Friendly Act or an idea for one? We are looking for a single act or several acts to perform for children and families 12 years of age and younger. If you’re a magician, juggler, circus performer, balloon creator, puppeteer, tell us about your show!

OutFest seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, non-binary, artists of colour and two spirit folks to submit their work.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding any of the applications and/or if we can assist you in any way. We are extremely proud of OutFest’s history of inclusiveness, safety, and professionalism. We look forward to reading your work.
